10 Things to do in Rottnest Island this Winter

Welcome to our first blog post! This is where we give local guides for our favourite spots over Australia. We thought we’d start with the best trip we’ve ever done, and that is when we spent a week on Rottnest Island in Winter. And just to be clear, if anyone’s ever told you Rottnest Island isn’t worth it in winter — they’re flat-out lying.

Yeah, we said it. Fewer crowds, baby quokkas, epic wildlife sightings, AND accommodation that’s available and doesn’t cost a kidney? Winter is actually the best time to visit this WA gem. Here’s how to make the most of your mid-year island escape.

But first and foremost:

We respectfully acknowledge the Whadjuk Noongar people, the Traditional Custodians of Wadjemup (Rottnest Island), and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We honour their continuing connection to this land and its waters.

Here are our top 10 best things to experiences in Wadjemup (Rottnest Island) this winter — let’s dive in!

1. Meet the Joeys

Winter on Rotto = peak joey season. That’s right — those iconic little quokkas? Their mini-me’s are making their grand debut. Like all good marsupials, the mums keep their babies tucked in their pouches until they’re ready to pop out and say hey. It’s basically a cuteness ambush.

Grab your phone and head toward the Settlement — especially around the cafes and shops — where you’ve got the best chance of spotting a proud quokka mum and her tiny sidekick. Just don’t feed them and be respectful.

2. Wildlife Encounters

Between the months of August and December – but sometimes as early as June and July – the waters around Rotto turn into a whale highway. Humpbacks and southern right whales cruise past the island. Bring your binoculars (or just squint artistically) and scan the horizon for tail slaps and blowhole sprays.

The best viewing spots for whale watching are:

  • The West End: Cape Vlamingh and Cathedral Rocks viewing platforms
  • Pinky Beach: Head to Bathurst Lighthouse for epic views
  • Little Armstrong Bay

While you’re in your wildlife era, keep your eyes peeled for the other icons of the island:

  • 🐦 Birdlife — make a checklist of must-see species
  • 🦅 The giant osprey stack towering at Fish Hook Bay
  • 🦭 New Zealand fur seals chilling at Cathedral Rocks

3. Cycling

Skip the summer heat and enjoy Rottnest’s 22km of scenic road network. Pedal past coastal cliffs, white sand beaches, and turquoise waters with the cool winter breeze on your face.

You can hire a bike at the local shop, Pedal & Flipper, or check if your ferry company offers rentals. Choose what fits your budget best.

Tips for your ride:

  • Fuel up at the Settlement before heading out clockwise around the island.
  • Carry water and snacks — refill stations are sparse on the western side.
  • Pack layers for the changing weather.

4. Choo Choos and Guns

Take a break from the bike and take the train ride through Rotto’s rugged scenery. The line ends at Oliver Hill, where you can check out the massive coastal defence guns (yes, they’re huge) and join a guided tour into the underground tunnels. History, views, and a little bit of adventure — the ultimate winter combo.

5. Explore the Salt Lakes

Get up close to Rotto’s salt lakes on the Gabbi Karniny Bidi trail — a 9.5km loop that winds over gentle hills, through beautiful bushland, and across a boardwalk that feels like it’s floating on the salty surface.

✨ Hot tip: Short on time? Skip the full loop and head straight to Vlamingh Lookout (a 10-minute walk or five-minute cycle from Thomson Bay) for a dreamy view of the lakes. Winter’s soft light makes the colours pop even more — the ultimate photo moment.

6. Take a Lighthouse Tour

Head to the heart of the island and climb to the very top of Wadjemup Lighthouse — the fourth tallest of its kind in Australia. As you wind your way up the 155-step spiral staircase, your guide will spill all the historic secrets of this coastal icon. At the top, brace yourself for big views (and even bigger winds). Totally worth the leg workout.

7. Head to the Museum

If the weather turns moody (or you just need a breather from the bike seat), swing by the Rottnest Island Museum. It’s small but surprisingly packed with stories and historic treasures that’ll give you a whole new appreciation for the island.

Here’s what you’ll find inside:

  • 🗺 Maps & maritime history showing Rotto’s life as a bustling port and military base.
  • 🪙 Indigenous artefacts, shipwreck relics, and objects from the island’s early days.
  • 📖 Stories of Wadjemup and its deep cultural significance to the Noongar people.
  • 🦴 Natural history displays featuring shells, fossils, and wildlife info.

A quick stop that’ll leave you feeling like a local history buff — and it’s the perfect rainy-day activity.

8. Winter Swims

Yes, you can still swim in winter. Perth’s winters are mild enough that a dip on a sunny day is totally doable (and honestly, kind of refreshing if you’re game). The water’s definitely on the crisp side, but some days are warm enough to make you forget you’re technically in “winter.” Plus, that crystal-clear turquoise doesn’t disappear just because it’s July. Bring a towel, embrace the goosebumps, and earn bragging rights for your winter swim.

☀️ Best beaches for a winter dip:

  • The Basin (calm, shallow, and iconic)
  • Little Parakeet Bay (cute and protected from the wind)
  • Pinky Beach (bonus: lighthouse views while you thaw out)

9. Catch the Sunset (or Sunrise)

Winter sunsets just hit different. The skies light up in fiery oranges and soft pinks, the beaches are blissfully empty, and it’s the perfect way to wrap up your day on the island.

And if you’re an early bird (or just still awake from stargazing), catch the sunrise the next morning as it rises over Perth City. Trust us — it’s next-level beautiful and 100% worth setting your alarm for.

🌅 Best spots to watch the show:

  • For sunrise Thomson Bay is the perfect spot to see Perth wake up in the distance.
  • Watch the Sunset from Bathurst Lighthouse overlooking Pinky Beach
  • One of the most underrated spots for a beautiful sunset is Vlamingh Lookout — a peaceful spot with panoramic views of the salt lakes and a beautiful monument to the island’s history.

💡 Hot tip: Bring a beanie and coffee — winter mornings and evenings are crisp but so worth it.

10. Local Eats & Treats

  • 🥧 Rottnest Bakery: For the best pies and pastries that’ll have you coming back for seconds.
